Terraform plans hide changes in noisy, hard-to-review output

Terraform users struggle to review plans when concise diffs hide changed attributes, warnings are collapsed, or repetitive tag and file-content changes drown out meaningful updates. They work around this by rerunning plans, writing filters, toggling environment variables, or digging through JSON—making it harder to inspect changes and share useful detail with approvers.

For terraform infrastructure engineers and plan approvers. Mentioned from Apr 2017 to Jul 2025 on GitHub.

  1. In the last year alone, I've wasted too many hours re-running terraform plan over and over just to see the next warning when I could have fixed them all at once
  2. Pretty frustrating to look through 100 resources changing because of tags only when making big infrastructure changes. I started writing some python to filter out updates with only tag changes but this would be fantastic as some kind of option like --suppress-modifed-resources-with-tag-changes-only
