Python developers struggle to make editors resolve the right environment

Python developers using managed environments or multiple project environments can end up with an editor pointed at the wrong interpreter—or no usable interpreter at all. The reports cover symlinked uv environments, asdf and PATH discovery, PEP 723 scripts, and switching test environments, leading to problems such as incorrect code analysis and repeated manual selection. Today, developers may have to point the editor at an environment themselves or toggle environments in its GUI, and behavior differs across tools.

For python developers using managed environments in code editors. Mentioned from Nov 2022 to Dec 2025 on GitHub.

  1. Using uv virtual environments with Cursor, Cursor appears to follow the symlink and give me the wrong environment. I'm also following up to see if it's something I can fix within Cursor, but I've had no luck so far
  2. However, this means that the selection of which Python version to use is dependent on the current working directory. This is where I am having issues with vscode-python
