PC video hobbyists struggle with quick, lightweight edits

PC gamers and video hobbyists want to trim footage, reduce large file sizes, or prepare shorter videos. They describe editing as tedious or bloated, and report friction with codec support and compressing files without noticeable quality loss. The signals point to several adjacent editing tasks, rather than one clearly dominant feature.

For PC video hobbyists and gameplay creators. Mentioned from Mar 2021 to Sep 2026 on Bluesky, GitHub, Hacker News and Stack Exchange.

  1. For me it's either that the alternatives didn't work as smoothly or were too bloated. My main usecase is trimming game-content captured from nvidia shadowplay and precompressing it as to avoid the overly heavy and speed optimized compression of youtube and streamable
  2. I used to use VirtualDub software for this, but it doesn't support many new features and codecs, so no way to use it
