Occasional readers can't buy individual paywalled articles
Occasional news and magazine readers say they would pay for specific articles, but many publishers require a recurring subscription, an account, or an email signup. A subscription is poor value when someone only wants one or two pieces, and very small payments are hard to make economical once payment fees are included. A third-party service also cannot provide legitimate access unless publishers opt in.

I think it's v sad we haven't worked out a universal per-article micropayment option as I would happily pay like 10p each time, probably adding up to £1 a day but across four or five news/analysis sites that I'm not going to subscribe to individually
I don't want to pay $20/mo just to read 1 or 2 articles. I'd have to remember to unsubscribe, and I'd end up forgetting and then two years later: oh crap, I just paid NYT hundreds of bucks for 2 articles. I would happily pay $1 to read 1 article. $2 for a lengthy piece of investigative journalism
