Developers struggle to update one package without breaking others

Developers using package managers want to fix or update one package without changing a wider set of packages and risking disruption to their workflows. They also lack a clear, low-effort way to learn when updates are available and what might be affected. The evidence centers on Nix and Homebrew; the Clip Studio Paint update complaint is a separate consumer-software case.

For developers managing Nix or Homebrew environments. Mentioned from Oct 2024 to Jun 2026 on Bluesky and Hacker News.

  1. A few weeks ago I needed to update firefox for a bug fix that was causing a crash, but of course that meant updating all of nixpkgs. When I finished the switch, the new version of pipewire was broken in some subtle way and I had to roll it back and have been dealing with firefox crashing once a week instead
  2. Does homebrew still do that insane thing when you want to upgrade a single package it tell you "hold my beer" and starts installing postgres and some obscure python version?
