Developers struggle to inspect noisy and awkward code diffs

Developers reviewing code and configuration encounter different kinds of friction: whitespace or line-ending changes can obscure meaningful edits, diff panes may not fit their preferred layout, and some workflows need comparisons across more than two files or revisions. Built-in viewers and command-line workflows do not consistently offer the filters, views, and comparison flows people request, so some users switch tools, use extensions, or fall back to scripts and the terminal.

For developers reviewing code and configuration across files or revisions. Mentioned from May 2017 to Mar 2026 on Bluesky, GitHub and Stack Exchange.

  1. I wish to ignore these unimportant changes via regex. A simple setting of diffEditor.ignoreRegex or similar would suffice
  2. VS Code allows to easily compare two files by choosing Select for compare and Compare with selected. But we can only select two files. diff3, kdiff3 and vimdiff do the job but I would prefer it integrated into VS Code
