Creators struggle to make custom avatars usable across virtual platforms

VRChat creators describe technical hurdles when turning personalized 3D models into usable avatars, including Unity setup, non-full-body-tracking configuration, and Quest optimization. Others want more customizable premade models or an easier way to make avatar references, while hardware cost and desktop limitations also deter some users. A creator-side tool could simplify parts of the avatar workflow, but it would not solve VRChat’s hardware or desktop-feature limitations.

For independent avatar creators and VRChat users. Mentioned from Nov 2023 to Jun 2026 on Bluesky.

  1. i am in no way adept at using unity. The most experience I got is porting a model to go into Blender So yeah port away into VRC cuz I hate using Unity but it'd be really cool see them in VRC :)
  2. optimizing my custom avatar to be quest compatible is such a pain
