CI teams struggle to reuse and manage build caches reliably

Developers using CI and build systems report long rebuilds when workflows cannot locate or update the right cache, especially on deployment events. Cache capacity and cleanup can also become problems, while some build-system combinations do not share cached work well. Existing cache mechanisms are often tied to a platform or build system, so a useful product would need to make cache keys, refreshes, and retention easier to control across workflows.

For CI and build engineers. Mentioned from Apr 2017 to Jun 2024 on GitHub and Stack Exchange.

  1. Currently a process that takes 1m on all the other branches, takes 15min on deployment. There must be some way to avoid this
  2. In my case it would reduce the compilation time from 20 minutes to 3 minutes if I could use ccache for QT/C++
